Most women don’t struggle with healthy eating because they “lack discipline.”
They struggle because of the role they’re playing in the process. And some roles will keep you stuck no matter how motivated you are.
In this episode, I break down the 3 approaches to healthy eating I see over and over — and only one of them actually creates lasting change.
You’ll learn:
→ The difference between being a Consumer, a Student, and a Creative in your health journey→ The specific belief that keeps each type spinning their wheels→ Why doing everything “right” can still leave you with zero results→ How to shift into the mindset where you stop waiting for answers and start creating them
If you’ve been taking notes, listening to podcasts, following plans, and still not where you want to be, this will show you exactly why and what to do instead.

Hello, my dear friends. Welcome back to the healthy eating for busy women podcast.I’m happy you’re here with me this week and i once again am so thrilled that you found time in your busy life to […0.6s] learn how to make healthy eating easier, to learn how to make the weight loss results you want more accessible. That is what i am here to help you do.And in case you’re new, i am your host cat. I have been helping women accomplish these things for almost the past decade now.Helping y’all is the joy of my life. And so i am excited to do that […0.5s] today. And i […0.6s] really think what we’re gonna discuss today is going to be so […0.6s] useful for beginning any health journey. And this is actually, […0.5s] a description i used with my membership recently with my ladies in there. And why i created this concept is i really wanted them to understand […0.5s] who they needed to be in my process in order to create really foundational, transformational results. And how i am going to position this today is three distinct approaches to healthy eating. But also what i’m referring to here is three distinct personas you can have when it comes to participating in any health journey. And this definitely applies if you are a client of mine. So if you’re listening to this, and i am your coach, make sure you really dig into these concepts. But if you are a podcast listener or you’re just finding my content, i want you to use this to inform you where you’re stuck, why you aren’t creating the results you want now, and how that is a product of who you are being in that area of your life.Alright, so without further ado, what i’m gonna do is i’m just gonna simply describe […0.6s] each approach to healthy eating that i most see.And for those of y’all again, who are new, this is not my first rodeo. I have seen […0.4s] hundreds and thousands of women from around the world, all different walks of life. My demographic is very […0.5s] large. What my demographic tends to have in common is that we are busy, burnt out, stressed women who want to be healthier. We want to lose weight, change our eating habits, but it feels like there’s just too much in the way, too much going on. So if that relates to you, this will apply to you.So the very first approach or persona i tend to see […0.6s] in this area, right, in healthy eating and weight loss, and this is gonna be the most common one. So what we’re gonna do is i’m gonna tell you guys the three, and then it’s gonna go from most common to least common, which unfortunately, that also means, we’re gonna go from the least amount of progress and results to the most amount […0.5s] progress results.Alright, so the consumer […0.5s] is the first persona […0.4s] i tend to see, and it’s what i see the most. It is the most common persona when it comes to health, wellness, […0.4s] anything like that. And here’s what a consumer is. We will all have been this at some point, so zero judgment, […0.5s] the consumer is that version of us who just takes in a lot of information. Alright, that’s what we see as necessary and most useful. So this is the version of us that takes a lot of notes. I always imagine and i am this person, so, haha, there’s no judgment here. When you go to a conference or a teaching and you’re taking pictures of the slides to look back up on them later, and then you never do.Haha, i am that person, sometimes this is the consumer, right? So they take lots of classes, listen to lots of podcast, maybe lots of, videos, content everything as much information as you can get in.You see that as useful or better. And in fact, […0.4s] it can be to your detriment, right? Because we only want you to use the information that you need to solve this problem. And a really big problem with the consumer is that when they see it as valuable to […0.6s] learn a lot of information and take in as much information as they can, it actually prevents them from solving the problem cause they’re not taking action, but it feels useful and it feels productive because they’re learning new things.Does this make sense? And actually i’m giving you a lot of information here, but i want you to know what’s up, what a consumer does as a coping mechanism and we can raise our hands, we’ve all done this is they play it safe by just consuming the information without implementing it because then it feels productive without risking any failure. So […0.6s] that is just a really, in depth description, might have called you out a little bit on the consumer. And this is what most humans are unfortunately doing in the world is they’re very interested in healthy eating and weight loss, but they are not experienced with it. They’re not taking action on it.And again, i was someone who was interested in health for probably a decade before i really took action on it. So this is very normal. So we’ve got this consumer and then we’re gonna go up a level. And i wanna talk about the approach of being the student. So the student is a concept i talk about with my ladies in my community a lot, with my clients, my membership. We know what student energy is and so i’m going to […0.5s] share it with you and it is a step up from the consumer, but it’s not quite where we wanna be to create results because here’s what a student does. What makes them different from the consumer is they do take action. It’s not just consuming information, but here’s where they keep themselves stuck. It is very specific and this is the thing i see holding back most high achieving women. What the good student does is they do […0.5s] only what they’re told to. In terms of taking action, only what they’re told to. So the student in us is very attached to a specific how finding the right solution, finding the right […0.4s] checklist, right? And they think once they have that list of what to do, they just need to do it, […0.4s] and they’re really good at following through only with what they’re told to do.Now, here’s what the student and consumer have in common, it’s just in slightly different ways, right? The student also doesn’t […0.6s] need to opt into failure, It’s really interesting. So the consumer doesn’t opt into failure because they’re not taking action at all. They’re just consuming information. The student takes action, but they don’t have to opt into failure emotionally because even if they are taking action and, if the results don’t work, they could just blame it on the plan, they can blame it on the process, they can blame it on the to do list, right? They are so focused on external solutions in order to create the result, the a plus, […0.6s] rather than being resourceful and figuring out their own solution, which we’re gonna talk about. So they take action, but only do what they’re told to. They have a checklist of what to do and they do it.They learn and then they regurgitate that […0.4s] in their own life. So they do implement, but they regurgitate anything they’re told in a really by the book way. So this is the version of us that goes through the motions brilliantly. Maybe it’s the part of you that did really well in school. It’s that very type a approach, but what do a lot of people, […0.4s] who do well in school like this have trouble with afterwards? They aren’t very good at implementing unless someone is telling them exactly what to do. Why is that, y’all, why does that happen?Even if this isn’t you, i want you to think about it because it may come up for you in certain ways. Why do we have trouble taking action if we’re not told exactly what to do? It’s not cause you can’t take action. It’s not because you don’t have any answers. It’s because you don’t wanna do something wrong, right? You don’t wanna risk failure. So once again, the student is a step up from the consumer. This is where you might be seeing some results. So you’re doing the things, you’re taking the action and this is where you’ll start to get really bitter and resentful cause you’re like, i’m putting in the work, i’m doing the things and nothing’s working, my body’s not responding.Right? And it’s likely because you are in the student mentality and what we want you to be in, which i’m gonna talk about now is what i call the creative mindset. So obviously when we’re talking about healthy eating a mindset, we’re not doing art, we’re not crocheting, we’re not doing anything creative. But there is a creative, explorative, curious element to this work when you are […0.6s] in a place to create really insane result. So i wanna talk about the approach of being a creative in this process. So here’s what a creative […0.4s] does.So what they do is they hear concepts. So in my membership, what my clients do who are in the space, they hear what i teach, they listen to the coaching, they receive coaching, they get all the information very clearly, […0.5s] but then what happens is they’re not just the student, and then they just regurgitate what i tell them. What they do is they take everything i tell them and then they mix it with themselves. What they know what their preferences is, what they know works for them, what doesn’t. And you guys, this is the recipe to your success […0.5s] with making health changes in your life that are permanent and foundational. You can’t just be a good student and check a list without opting into your own responsibility of why you’re what you do and why you won’t do certain things, right? What works for you, what doesn’t, what your preferences are, what you’re gonna try, right? It’s experimentation and what we’re trying to do so much of the time as the consumer or student is not have to opt into experimenting with trial and error because that’s vulnerable. We don’t wanna fail. We don’t wanna disappoint ourselves or be responsible, cause then we’ll blame ourselves.Right, and the only way you are going to create results is if you get the expertise you need, and if you want that, get in my membership. You’ll get everything right, but get that expertise, and then mix it with your own wisdom and discernment. So what i will tell you to do as your coach is you’re gonna get everything you need, and then as you go, we do weekly and monthly evaluations in my process. You’re gonna come up with your own solutions, actions, hypotheses. You’re gonna be the one kind of, doing the scientific method, and then we’re gonna brainstorm step by step together to get you that result you want.Because what i want you to know, doing this a very long time is not one person’s […0.4s] version of healthy eating and weight loss to this result looks exactly the same as anyone else. It’s supposed to be unique to you.So there is no cookie cutter template that anyone could give you in order to have this result in your life. Cause your body is not a checklist, my love, you are not a checklist.Your relationship to creating the body want is supposed to be rich and fulfilling, and based on what feels good to you. And that can’t happen if we’re just putting ourselves into a box of right and wrong.Another really big thing which is actually insane when it comes to highly intelligent capable women If you are listening to this podcast, it’s incredible that we do this. Cause what we’re not taught to do in this area is to come up with our own wisdom.[…0.5s] We’re never told to come up with our own answers. And a lot of the times, what we’ll do, which, can happen is, alright, well, what do you think […0.5s] is necessary to stop overeating this week?Or what do you think went wrong last week that didn’t allow you to create the results you wanted. Or what do you think will be necessary?Right, the thing that we, have as a standard in my process is we work in partnership with each other, me as the coach, and you as the client, right, as the community. And what you start to build is what we call caregiver energy or parent energy. And you will develop the stable confidence and responsibility where you learn you are the best expert of you.And this only happens when you let yourself answer your own questions and implement your ideas with what to do next. So this is why we ask everyone else how to do something, because we don’t wanna be responsible. But what i want you to know is if you are struggling right now, or you implement something for a time, and then it doesn’t work long term is because you’re looking for solutions that aren’t actually relevant to you.It wasn’t created with you in mind. If someone selling you a checklist of things to do in order to, eat healthy and lose weight, like, a very specific version, then that’s what works for them. And they have all the best intentions, but yours might be different. There’s tactics, and then there’s strategy. Tactics are great. I teach my clients tactics. If you join me, you won’t emotionally eat right, you’ll learn how to […0.7s] heal your body cues all these things. You learn everything you need with the tactics. Strategy […0.5s] is adapting all of the tactics you learn to your personal strategy. And personal strategy happens when we develop maturity in this area of our lives, and i would say […0.5s] in my community, that’s the biggest transformation we go through together. We learn the tactics really quickly, cause you’re gonna watch the course. You’re gonna say, this is simple, this makes sense what i’m gonna do, but then the maturity of going through that process and answering your own questions, experimenting is how you’re gonna build your personal strategy. So went in on that identity there, but i hope it really makes sense, this distinction between the consumer, student and creative. Now what i wanna list out here is the belief system of each one. And i’m gonna keep this very short and simple, so you guys really understand this. Because each […0.4s] persona here is having a different thought, a different belief system, a different lens that they see this area through. And so i want us to consider each one here. And here’s what i think the belief system of the consumer is the one who is taking lots of notes, consuming lots of information, and just learning all the things without taking action. What the consumer thinks the problem is, is i don’t know enough […0.6s] or i’m missing something. And i want you to really be honest with yourself and see, is that something you’re believing now?And before you try to argue with me, cause i get it, i would argue with me too. Haha, i want you to lean back […0.4s] and really observe where that’s gonna lead you.Cause what will happen when you try and have awareness of your thoughts at first, if this is not something you practice, you might feel compelled to argue with what you think is true. Well, i don’t know enough cause there are things for me to learn. That’s not what we’re saying here. What i want you to see is the functionality of the thought, i don’t know enough. So what the thought i don’t know enough compels you to do from that uncertainty, right, is it compels you to just consume more information and that’s it. And then you don’t take action and create the results thereby further believing, oh, i must not know enough, right? The caveat with this is, yes, there are things that you might wanna learn, but that’s not actually the problem. The problem is that you’re not taking action. See what i mean? So we’ve gotta watch these belief systems that are creating the actions or the in actions that we’re taking. So here’s what the student believes and this is what they think. The problem is […0.6s] the student thinks, i just don’t know what to do, […0.5s] right? Or they think i do know what to do, i’m doing all the right things and i should have the result by now. So now they’re making the issue just a right set of actions, right? So they either know the right set of actions or they don’t, or it’s just not working. They think of this area like a puzzle piece that just works or it doesn’t, so notice how that will show up. They’ll just look for a checklist, they’ll outsource, they’ll look for solutions and they aren’t actually trial and erroring in a way that they need to create results.Very sneaky, right? You guys, it’s really fascinating. So here’s what the creative believes that allows them to solve this problem. And i want you guys to really try this on […0.6s] and observe this. They believe i always make sure i have everything i need to do this, […0.5s] it’s such provider energy, it’s such parent energy, right? They think, i can figure this out, here’s what i’m gonna do, here’s what i’m gonna try. It’s so resourceful.Do you see that? And if this feels tough for you to not argue with, one thing i bet you and i could agree with right now is that the mentality of the creative […0.5s] would be more productive in any case than the consumer or the student, right? It will always be more productive to think, i can figure this out, and here’s what i’m gonna do versus i don’t know what to do or i don’t know enough, […0.5s] right? We don’t have to argue with those thoughts or observe whether they’re true or not, just stop perpetuating them in those actions that you’re taking or the actions you’re not taking. Does that make sense? So thoughts […0.4s] matter. If you’re my student, if you’re my client, you know this. Now […0.6s] i also wanna talk about […0.6s] what to process if you’re in each persona, because we wanna get you moving to the next stage and getting results, so you can feel that And here’s what the consumer who’s, in taking a lot of information and not taking action. Here’s what they usually need to emotionally process. Because if we’re not creating results, it’s because of an emotion that we’re not aware of, and we’re not willing to feel, […0.6s] and this will make sense. So the consumer is not processing uncertainty. So they think i don’t know enough, i’m not sure, […0.6s] right, i don’t know. And on the surface, they’re experiencing a lot of uncertainty, right? That’s what’s going on, on the surface, and it’s there […0.4s] that showing up in their, in actions, their procrastination, they’re not doing the things right now.We have surface emotions that are very reactive, and then we have more tender emotions that more live in the belly and at the base […0.4s] of the body, right. So often times, we’ll need to process surface uncertainty as the consumer. But then also sometimes what that rude emotion is, is doubt. So what doubt thinks is […0.6s] this won’t work for me, […0.4s] and it can’t be this simple […0.6s] for me, right, this is gonna be hard for me.When you have doubt, a coping mechanism is going to be […0.6s] living in uncertainty, that’s not personal, it feels logical and thinking, oh, i just don’t know enough, and i’m unsure, does this make sense?I honestly, i’m giving you guys a lot of deeper concepts today, if it’s a little over your head, that is okay. This is a little more advanced work, but i want you guys to use this to just […0.6s] explore what could be coming up for you right now. Alright? This is the type of work we do together and we would unpack together in my membership. And so if you want support with this, get in there. We will support your face off.Now […0.5s] here’s what the student needs to process. So on the surface emotionally, what it looks like as the student […0.6s] is a lot of entitlement and i have been here, you have been here, it’s okay, we’re human. Surface entitlement as the student often looks like i’m doing everything, so i should have the result, right? It’s what also what i call a vending machine mindset. It’s like you input the stuff and you’re waiting for the output. And often times, what the more tender emotion is deeper in the body is a feeling of helplessness. Okay? And what the thoughts of helplessness often look like here is, i’m not capable of making these decisions. I don’t trust myself, i can’t trust myself. I might gain the weight back.I’m gonna mess this up, […0.7s] right, and so what happens is they are avoiding failure, and they know that they could figure this out if they wanted to, and participated in trial and error, but they’re sticking their feet in the mud, and they’re unwilling to this version of us because they just want someone to give them the answer. It’s so much entitlement, right, and we are not entitled to the perfect answer in this result in our lives. We are responsible for figuring it out. That is the truth of it, you guys, and that’s what i’m always here to help you guys do, because that’s the reality. I’m always gonna keep it real with you.Alright, and so the creative, let’s talk about […0.6s] her as well. When we’re in her energy, […0.6s] what she’s gonna have, coming up emotionally a lot of the time, and all of my clients go through this. It’s to surrender into resourcefulness. So the thoughts i make sure i have everything i need and tapping into curiosity where we think, here’s what i’ll try next.Real quick, i wanna mention why i say surrender into resourcefulness. This is very deliberate on my part, is because you are not gonna wanna come up with your own answers. You’re not gonna wanna be resourceful. You are not going to want to parent yourself a lot of the time. You’re not gonna want to be in charge of it and be the creator of it. But at some point, we just need to surrender into that and say, you know what? I’m willing to fail. I’m willing to just answer my own questions.I’m willing to be resourceful and to stop blaming my external circumstances on the results i have. I’m ready to just take full responsibility […0.5s] and do this. I’m ready to take control of my life and feel empowered and confident in this area. This is how it happens. You guys, i know that sometimes the jargon we can use on this podcast is it’s really just, it’s arbitrary, right? These are just words you’re using to describe different energies, the consumer, the student, the creative. So i don’t want you to put this in a box. I just want you to use these concepts to help you right now figure out and make sense of why you’re not creating the results you want. Who are you being right now without shame or judgment, right? Because this is something that we’re all gonna do.Are you in that consumer energy? Are you in the student energy, right? Or maybe you’re feeling a little entitled cause you’re being really good at a checklist, but not so good at being resourceful, right? Are there areas where you are in the creative energy and that’s great, but we just wanna move into her a little bit more.I hope this helps you. I hope that you take something away from this. If you want the ultimate support with this and everything you need, make sure to get inside on your eating habits.
