The Humility of Long Term Weight Loss

Healthy Eating Morning Routine Kat Rentas

If you’ve ever said “I am doing all the right things…so why am I not losing weight?”

This episode is the perspective shift you’ve been missing.

Because when the scale doesn’t move, most of us won’t get curious. We’ll get defensive. And, this is normal.

Your brain goes straight to:“I knew this wouldn’t work.”“My body must be different.”“Something is wrong with me.”

But what’s actually happening isn’t mystery or malfunction — it’s a missing skill: a lack of humility when losing weight.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

→ How entitlement sneaks in as “I should have results by now”→ Why craving certainty keeps you from hearing what your body is actually saying→ What humility looks like in practice when you’re learning to listen to your body→ How to troubleshoot without spiraling into “I’m broken” thinking

Your body isn’t unpredictable. It’s consistently communicating with you all the time.

This work is about becoming a woman who doesn’t demand quick answers from her body — but one who’s willing to learn what those answers are each day.

Episode Transcript

Hello, my dear friends. Welcome back to the Healthy Eating for Busy Women podcast. I’m so happy that you’re able to take some time for yourself and listen to this episode. Whether you have been with me for a while on this podcast or it’s your first time. And if it’s your first time, my name is Kat and I help […0.5s] type a ambitious, maybe a little perfectionistic women heal their eating habits so they can eat healthy more naturally and lose weight for the last time. So I have been doing this work with women around the world for almost a decade now, and during that time, I have Learned a lot about how to best support you all. And I have really honed a process in that time to […0.6s] heal our eating habits in a way that makes sense for each of us.And that’s what I hope for every episode that […0.5s] I offer here on this podcast is that you can use it to […0.5s] meet you where you’re at right now. I think that there’s gonna be no cookie cutter solution or advice I or anyone could offer, right? But my hope is that you’re able to approach these episodes with the discernment to see how it fits you and to open up your mind […0.6s] to new ideas. So before we get into today’s topic which I think is a really interesting one to talk about today, if you could do me a massive favor, if you have been, with me for some time on this podcast and you have loved it or if you find you enjoy today’s episode, you could do me a massive favor and leave a five star review on the podcast with a little something you Learned from it.This is actually what tells podcasting platforms that this has value and that it is helpful and it helps it get in front of more women who it could serve. So I appreciate you in advance. But […0.5s] let’s get into today’s topic which is the humility […0.6s] of a weight loss journey. And when we think about the concept of humility, I don’t think this is something that is brought up […0.6s] at all, really. When it comes to health and a weight loss journey, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this brought up when I was really struggling. And it’s such a big part […0.6s] of really healing and removing your food struggles and losing weight for the last time.Because what I know when we tend to be more accomplished or Type a or intellectual is sometimes we can bring some ego into the equation when it comes to change. And this is not a character flaw. This is actually something that’s very natural to do. And what I mean by that is […0.5s] ego can be focused on what we already know, what we think, what, you know, we want. And it’s very focused on entitlement at times. And a part of entitlement that comes up when I coach women to weight loss is the thought, […0.4s] I deserve this to happen. I deserve to lose weight […0.4s] because of all the effort I put in.So even for you right now, I would want you to think about […0.4s] all of the effort that you’ve put into solving for your health. Maybe it’s all the […0.6s] content you’ve consumed, the research you’ve done, the things you’ve tried. I want you to think about how much effort you have put in, right? And maybe it’s off and on over the years, but it’s probably stacked up at this point and where potentially has that LED to you, of course, feeling entitled to having […0.4s] the body you want or the health you want?I know this is something I struggled with for many years. I’m a human. I still struggle with entitlement. I think we all do. And so I really don’t want you to judge yourself for this, but I think that’s the palette […0.4s] cleanser I wanna set for today.First is where do you feel entitled […0.5s] to the health you want, the results you want, the, eating habits you want? This can be a really important thing to address because it will show where we’re not having humility in the process. And this is not to judge ourselves or beat ourselves up, which I know you might be tempted to do if you notice entitlement. That’s not what I want you to do. I want us to use this awareness to fill those gaps for you. Because here is a very humbling part of this process and it’s actually a really specific thing when it comes to losing weight for the last time because a couple of really big skills that you will have to learn to do this correctly […0.5s] is to heal your stress, to regulate your stress, and to communicate with your body in the form of hunger, fullness, satisfaction, things like that.So it’s like communicating with your emotions and nervous system and communicating with your physical body. These are two areas of skills you’re gonna have to master. And that is what I teach. That is what I take women through. And that process of learning to communicate with your body and your brain […0.4s] is incredibly humbling. And I’m gonna explain why and I’m gonna explain what I mean, but this is something many of my clients do not expect. I certainly didn’t expect this. And I know you’re probably not gonna expect this either, because I wanna talk about when it comes to addressing your emotions or communicating with your body, why it’s gonna come up against potential entitlement and intellectualizing that you might be approaching health with.Because I’m gonna give you an example of something that comes up a lot in coaching, which is normal, I’ll have a client say, cat, I’m listening to my body […0.4s] and I’m stopping when I’m full, but I’m not losing weight.Or when they learn to regulate stress, they might say, cat, I’m checking with my emotions every day and I feel like I’m doing what I need to be doing, but the scales not going down, which makes sense. They’re coming to me with a problem and that is why I am there to support them. But when this happens, what I want you to see, when you’re thinking I’m doing this and I’m not losing weight, you’re thinking something has gone wrong, […0.6s] right? You’re assuming something is not working correctly, and this is a very specific mindset to have.So I want you to stay with me when you think I’m doing it right, but the result is still not happening. All of your stuff is gonna come up, and here’s what it might sound like.I knew this wouldn’t work, […0.5s] right, where you’re doubting, you think this was too good to be true. You think my body is broken, and I’m a special case, and something’s wrong with me, and there’s a reason why this isn’t working for me specifically. We can get into our petty mindset here, which again is totally normal. Now as I mentioned, the biggest thing I see come up with these moments are entitlement and an attachment to certainty. So entitlement says I should have a result, and what I’m doing already should be enough, which will never make true or make sense, right? And I really wanna declare this here. This is the firmness I want you to have.Any result you have with your body makes sense based on the conditions it’s being placed in. When it comes to weight loss, when it comes to your eating habits, your stress, […0.4s] any result makes sense. There’s not a real scenario ever where you should have a result you don’t have. And I check myself with this all the time. I’m not a unicorn. There are many times in my life. I’m saying, listen, cat, the results always make sense. And this is where I’m lacking humility and I’m having entitlement. Oh, the effort and energy I’m putting in, I should have this by now. And that is something I have to process, right? So entitlement will come up when you’re not creating a result you expected and you feel entitled to. You’ll think, I should have a result, what I’m doing should be enough, can never be true, but this is normal. You’ll also have, like I said, attachment to certainty. And what attachment to certainty is this is actually not something all the humans experience. It’s more so my clients who […0.5s] are very type a and intellectual, so this might apply to you where attach, attachment to certainties says I just need to know what to do. That’s all I just need to know what to do.I just need to know the equation to create […0.7s] weight loss. If I just knew that this wouldn’t be a problem. So if we’re not losing weight, we’ll think, well, I must not be doing the right equation, something must be wrong in my approach. I’m doing right. Entitlement says I should have the result based on what I’m doing.Attachment to certainty says there must be something I’m missing right now, and I don’t already. No, and this is where it keeps a lot of my women stuck, because […0.5s] what happens when we’re entitled or were attached to certainty is we are not gonna be resourceful. So this is when clients, me, we will stop taking action and taking responsibility for our results, cause entitlement says I should have the result based on what I’m doing. And so it is this mentality that we’re owed. Haha, you know what I mean? That’s what it feels like when I’m there too.It feels like we’ve paid our dues. And what do we do when we think we’re owed for something? We wait to be paid, […0.7s] right? We wait to be given what we’ve already paid for.So that is where we want to capture entitlement and not […0.5s] dwell in it, not indulge in it, because it will put us into, in […0.6s] action where we’re gonna swim in misery cause we think, whoa, is me, I should have it by now.And you guys, this is just a sad story the brain […0.4s] is offering you, and this is the case for me as well. If I’m feeling entitlement, I know it’s another form of my victim thinking where I’m thinking, oh, I should have this by now, but no, I’m not taking responsibility. And that might be coming up for you too. Attachment to certainty also produces inaction because instead of just continuing to take action on what you do know, right? Can, instead of you continuing to experiment with your body and figure this out, […0.5s] you’re gonna instead focus on more passive action like research, consuming information, figuring out solutions. Cause you’re thinking, well, […0.4s] I just don’t know what to do.That’s for sure. The problem is logical because when I find what the solution is, I’m gonna be certain, […0.6s] and that’s what’s gonna happen, right? But here’s what I want you to understand. Our results with our body are solvable. But we need to understand that we’re never going to speak exactly the same language as our body. So there’s two truths that have to happen here. We have to […0.5s] not stew an entitlement and attachment to certainty and not take action. We do have to take responsibility and show up […0.6s] to […0.5s] our body’s needs. And then on the other side, there also needs to be this understanding that we will never figure out our body’s needs like a puzzle piece. There’s not one set equation that is forever gonna work with your body.So here’s a really […0.5s] practical analogy, right, entitlement says the equation has added up, and it’s not working. So it’s thinking, I did 5+ 5= 10, so it should equal ten. Attachment to certainty, certainty says, well, I should understand, what equation equals 10, and so I need to look for the correct equation. And so that’s what I’m gonna try and do, right. When you are not indulging in that narrative and that belief system, you are not depending on knowing the set equation […0.6s] with your body in order to take action on it. So this might sound a little confusing, so I’m gonna give you a specific client example related to this when solving for fullness. So I recently had a client, she was making beautiful progress losing weight. And her body was really responding to the stress regulation work she was doing. And actually she was losing, […0.4s] consistently a fair bit of weight before even getting to the work with her body cues.So what happened is she was having great progress, gets to the work where she starts honoring her fullness and checking in on her cues, right? And her body stopped losing weight for a couple weeks. And really what was interesting is the narrative that came up for her was […0.5s] right this should be working.I’m already checking in with my body. Why is my body not losing weight? Something must be going wrong. And then the follow up thought she had was, well, also I must […0.6s] not know an equation […0.5s] that is the right equation in order for me to honor my fullness. So this came, to a head with a lot of overthinking in her mind, she was like, how do I know when I’m full? What’s the perfect time when I’m full? How do I know? So my body can release the weight, and here’s what I want you guys to know. What I said to her was you won’t ever know the equation of your fullness. You won’t ever know exactly every single day […0.6s] when you are full. And it’s not gonna be this, such […0.4s] sure certain equation that your body is gonna give you every day.And so my client said to me, well then why am I not losing weight? And I said to her, […0.6s] when was the last time you actually continuously checked in with your body every day […0.5s] to, stop eating when you’re full with the best intentions. And she said, oh, a couple weeks ago, […0.5s] because I noticed my body stopped losing weight. So I went back to the drawing board instead of taking action on honoring my fullness at the meals.Do y’all see what I mean? So what this client did is when she assumed something had gone wrong, she went back to the drawing board, started researching, started assuming that there was […0.5s] this, intellectual puzzle piece with fullness that she had to get versus surrendering certainty, surrendering that she deserved any type of result and saying, you know what?I’m just gonna continue being curious and checking with my body every day as best as I can. And I’m gonna let that be enough. What’s going on with a lot of you is […0.5s] you actually […0.4s] do not have high stakes when it comes to losing the weight you wanna lose. All you need to do is to check in with your body and to start healing […0.6s] in order to see results. But what gets you out of that bare minimum approach is when something doesn’t work out the way you expected or that you feel entitled to, you think, oh, I need to be certain though before I take action again.I need to really be sure about an equation with my body or how it works before I take action again. Because I […0.4s] don’t wanna be disappointed.I don’t wanna fail. And what I’m telling you guys is that’s why you don’t have the result, because of that entitlement, and because of that attachment to, understanding a perfect equation. You’re never going to know a perfect equation, […0.5s] and you can still create results that way. Does that make sense? So here are the two emotions that posture you the best in this work. And if entitlement and attachment to certainty keeps you stuck, here are the two that will set you free.So the first is patience, […0.5s] right? Because I want you to imagine this client when she was feeling entitled and which is normal, haha, we all do this. She was feeling entitled and she was attached to an equation with her fullness. What if instead she had the energy of patience when that moment happened? And here’s what patient says. It says, I’m willing to take the time to learn what my body needs right now to create this result. So here’s what she would do differently and this is actually textbooks. This is actually exactly what she did in response where she continued losing the weight. She stepped into patients where she said, I’m willing to take the time to learn what my body needs to create this result. What she did was she actually humbled herself, which is the next piece. And what she did is she then started going to her meal, saying, body, what do you need from me right now?And she actually started noticing that she wasn’t honoring her fullness as […0.6s] much as she thought. She actually was over eating. She was eating to the point of feeling stuffed. And the reason why she wasn’t able to take responsibility and have the patience to notice these things was she was feeling entitled, […0.7s] and also she was attached to certainty when she noticed things not working versus just checking in.Also another element that you will wanna posture yourself with is […0.4s] humility. So it’s the big one we’re talking about today, because my friends here is what humility says. This is what my client stepped into to make it work. Humility says if I have certain results, there is a reason […0.6s] for it, and it says what am I doing or not doing right now that might be contributing to this result, what is left right now for me to investigate […0.4s] or learn. And one, when we’re in entitlement and attachment, that means we’re not gonna check in with our body and humble ourselves to see I how could I better provide for my body, what does make sense here? We’re gonna miss all of that and then suffer, cause we think we’re a special case when you are patient, and you are humble when things stop working as you expected with your weight loss. I promise y’all, you’re gonna find that answer. You’re gonna find the simple logical reason […0.5s] why your weight isn’t continuing to go down, and what you can do to better support your body to do so.But that requires patience of, I’m willing to take the time to understand my body more, and the humility of if these results are happening, I’m gonna humble myself and know it’s for a good reason. So body, what am I doing or not doing that’s contributing to this? What do I need to learn from you?I want you guys to almost energetically sit at the foot of your body’s needs, and to assume that it knows best.Because when we humble ourselves in this way with learning from our body, it’s gonna make everything so much easier. You’re not gonna take on this load that you weren’t meant to take on with solving this […0.5s] problem.Cause what we’re trying to do is we’re trying to lose weight all from our own intellectualism and certainty. And what we expect, the pressures and the expectations, right? We weren’t meant to carry all of that. That’s too much. All you need to do is to humble yourself and to know, you know, what […0.5s] I set the conditions for my body to heal. And if my body stops responding, I need to check in and say, what could I do a little bit better?Where could I tweak things? How does this make sense right now? And I want you guys to notice the lean back approach that that’s gonna have versus the lean forward approach of pressure, feeling entitled, having expectations, needing to feel certain. So I really want you guys to think about where right now, do you feel entitled or attached to being certain […0.5s] before or […0.4s] in your weight loss journey, right?Where do you feel entitled to results you want, where you’re standing aside and waiting for something to come to you before you give it your all.Where are you attached to certainty where you’re spending more time trying to solve an equation versus resourcefully […0.6s] taking action every day without being certain, without needing to know a to Z, all you focus on is a to B, and how can you start moving into […0.4s] patience where you actually take the time to learn things about your body and humility […0.6s] where you acknowledge if you have a result, it makes sense. So what do we need to do to better care for our body?An analogy I really love and this is no secret to y’all who listen to me is gardening.I love talking about this journey when it comes to being a gardener with our plants because it really has so many parallels. And I think it’s really fun to think about a gardener who feels really entitled and attached to certainty with their garden. Cause, like, imagine how that would go.Haha. Imagine a gardener […0.5s] looks at their garden and feels entitled to the growth where they say, well, I put it in this light and I gave it this much water. So if it’s not growing, we think it should have done so though that gardeners gonna quit tending to that garden completely. Why, would they continue? It wouldn’t make sense. And also, if they’re attached to certainty, I want you to imagine if they approach the garden […0.4s] and the plants aren’t sprouting or some leaves are falling off, whatever it is, […0.7s] and they think, well, there must be a specific equation where this wouldn’t happen. They probably go back to the drawing board and like from perfectionism about exactly what’s gonna guarantee […0.5s] that leaves never fall off or the plant doesn’t grow before they continue to care for the plants.Does this make sense? Because really, I want you guys to see that the search for the perfect equation is not the same thing as being resourceful with the garden with your weight loss. They’re actually opposite.Okay, with the gardener would say, you know what? I’m just willing to take the time to learn what this garden needs to provide for long term. They would just continue showing up each day, doing the bare minimum, trying different approaches little by little, and they would take responsibility for all of it.And then humility, I think the gardener would say, […0.7s] yeah, there’s not growth here, there’s a reason for it. So what am I doing or not doing that might contribute? This isn’t the same thing as needing certainty because you’re understanding that you’re never gonna be certain about exactly what the garden needs, but you don’t need to be certain in order to do your best and to […0.4s] try putting it in a different light or watering it differently, whatever that might look like. So […0.5s] this was a little bit of an open dialogue today. It’s not very structured or polish, but I’m hoping this makes sense and you took something away from it that can help you. This is a bit of an advanced concept that I coach on with my clients, but […0.5s] it is something that is a rite of passage that we all need to think about when […0.6s] healing the way we eat and losing weight for the last time.So I highly encourage you if you had a little light bulb moment here, or if you’ve been listening to this podcast for some time and you haven’t […0.6s] for you to these results yet. There’s no shame there at all. But I would highly encourage you to make the leap and get inside my coaching community. So I have a membership called on your eating habits. It will put you into the action you need in order to create these results now.And y’all, you don’t have to do this at the right time. You don’t have to have a whole lot of energy. We meet you exactly where you’re at […0.6s] in that process, and it’s gonna make everything feel lighter. You’re gonna feel clear, and you’re also just gonna have a really good time, cause we have a great community going on in this membership. So go to cat rentals.Com forward slash membership, get inside. I will be ready to, you you and support you.And I am so proud of you all for wherever you’re at in this journey, the fact that you listen to this episode is such […0.4s] a big deal in this crazy busy hectic life. So […0.7s] love you all so much. I hope you have a great week, and I will talk to you in a future episode. […0.4s][…0.4s]
