Are you striving to create more balance with healthy eating or your habits in general?
In today’s podcast episode, we’re diving into a perspective shift about balance — where attempting it might be the very thing holding you back from achieving the results you want.
Here’s what you’ll discover:
→ Why our attachment to “good performance” sabotages our weight loss goals
→ The danger of waiting for the perfect conditions to make real changes
→ What true “messy middle” balance looks like
→ How embracing the an unbalanced approach can build the life-long skills you’ll need for permanent weight loss.
It’s time to achieve the results you want now, by letting go of how you think it all should look.
Imagine what could change if you stopped needing your progress to look “balanced” and instead focused on skill-building over time, no matter the conditions.

Hello, my friends, welcome back to the podcast this week. So before we get into today’s episode, in case you missed our announcement from last week, I want you to know that my flagship program, own your eating habits has moved into a membership model. So this means that now you can access my four step process to becoming.
A naturally healthy eater and losing weight for the last time, you can come in and get coached by me and have access to a community of like minded women. So truly I designed this membership to be the ultimate, most effective resource to have in your back pocket with your eating habits and the value of this membership will only increase over time.
You guys, if my work is something that connects with you and you are interested in building the skills that I teach. You need to be in this membership. So I invite you to join us inside at catrentis. com forward slash membership. We are creating massive results as a community and [00:01:00] no one gets left behind you guys.
You will feel held, supported, and well equipped in this area of your life. All right. So today I’m going to be talking about creating balance. And I think we all know that this language gets thrown around a lot in the health and wellness community, but in line with what I teach, I want to offer you a perspective of balance that’s going to help you.
And I’m going to be offering one perspective shift of balance today. There are a few that I have talked about and more I will likely talk about, but I’m going to talk about one specific perspective switch that you will know if it applies to you. All right. So I want to talk about the struggle with creating balance first, and I’m going to talk about it in a way that’s related to client examples.
So clients of mine that I have coached often have this come up where they will create results and lose weight based on what I [00:02:00] teach. So we’ll be working together, they’ll be creating results, and their results are created from messy Progress. Okay. Because what we teach you how to master and own your eating habits is how to create healthy eating and weight loss results without life needing to look perfect.
All right. So that means no matter how you’re feeling right now or the circumstances going on, you can create massive results in that program. So, client comes in, learns that process, begins mastering the skills, and creates quote unquote messy progress. Like, I’m talking about journaling in the bathroom because they have no other time to themselves.
And then, what will happen once a client has lost weight doing it messy, Is then the clients will often time come to me and then set a new goal to have a more balanced approach to the result. So they want more routine, they want more structure, they want the follow through with the actions. to [00:03:00] look different in creating the results.
So in other words, if a client, and this is just one random example, if she was doing some reflection work and journaling in the bathroom, because that’s the only time she could do it, the next week she would set a goal to journal as part of a morning routine where she wakes up early and it looks more quote unquote balanced.
I want you all to guess what happens the following weeks that this client sets this goal to have more routine and have more balance. This is not a cookie cutter experience, but it’s very, very common. So what do we think happens the week after this client sets a new goal to create routine and balance?
What can happen is this client in this situation will not lose weight. She will stall her weight loss progress and create an experience where she feels stuck. Because what happened, right, is this client became attached [00:04:00] to finding balanced and a routine.
And so she stopped following through with the actions that created weight loss. when that routine wasn’t in place. Okay. So I’ll say that again.
What changed is a client was able to create results with messy progress. Just fitting the stuff in when it could happen and it didn’t look perfect. And then as soon as the client Set a new goal to have a more balanced approach where it was part of a routine, no results were created because then the goal became about what her progress looked like rather than the end result.
And if the routine didn’t happen, and it didn’t look the way she wanted, then there was no follow through at all. Okay, so this will make more sense as we discuss this today, but I want you to consider why you feel attached to things like balance, a routine, or your progress looking a certain way.
How we’re often conditioned as a society to [00:05:00] Is we will believe that good performance will create the results we want. So good performance is the expectations we place on ourselves for how we will take action. So the concept of a morning routine brings this up a lot for y’all. And it has for me in the past too. will think, okay, in order for me to eat healthy and lose weight, I need to journal when I wake up in the morning. I need to plan everything on my calendar.
I need to have all the foods prepped. We will set metrics in place to perform well with healthy eating and weight loss. When really we could set much lower expectations of how we will take action and still create the result. We could not plan all the things ahead of time. We could not have everything so prettily prepped.
ahead of time. And we teach this in Own Your Eating Habits. So if that feels like a gap where you’re unsure how to follow through on healthy eating without those things, that is exactly what that program is about. [00:06:00] But I just want you to notice how you will have an expectation of On what good performance is with healthy eating and weight loss.
And you likely believe that that is what’s necessary to create the results. You want a lot of the time, when many of you are referring to wanting balance in your life, what you’re really saying is you want the conditions of your progress to look pretty and ideal. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I love the pretty things too.
I love a routine. I love all of that, but I do not depend on having that routine or that balance to create and maintain the results I want. And that’s what I want for all of you. That is what I am here to help you with. A lot of the time, why we’re attached to balance and good performance as well, It’s because we want to feel worthy of the results we create.
We want to feel good enough. We want to feel like we’ve put in the work because then in our minds it will be more stable. For example, we’ll believe that our weight loss [00:07:00] is stable and we won’t gain the weight back the harder we work to create it. And this is not true. This is actually a fallacy. The harder you work to create weight loss emotionally, it will make it harder to maintain it.
But just consider this, consider why you are attached to balance and where are you attached to good performance that looks ideal. Because here’s what will happen if you stay attached to good performance or balance in the way I’m describing it. All of your results will be short term, and here’s why.
Because if you only learn to create results in ideal, balanced, pretty conditions, then you will not know what to do when stuff hits the fan, life gets hard, and you can’t have those ideal conditions. So a lot of diet culture, and even wellness culture, Teaches you to create results you want with your body through ideal actions, [00:08:00] through things that make your life better.
More structured or more balanced or pretty so a lot of people tell you you need a routine or a plan or to prep the things and I just want you to think what if this isn’t true first off and you can create results without any of these things and what if actually to learn that skill is the only way to create results.
Long term results, because then what do we do when balance isn’t available when life looks messy when we’re going through a season of grief or uncertainty or overwhelm, you must learn a manner of healthy eating and weight loss that doesn’t depend on balance, pretty performance or ideal circumstances.
Right. And so this concept of wanting to create balance, we want to be really mindful of that because of course, balance is lovely. Having a routine is amazing when it works out, it’s so fun to have the things prepped and the things planned [00:09:00] for. When that’s available, but do not make the mistake of one thinking you need those things to create results now.
And two, depending on those things to create results, because then you are not equipping yourself for longterm success. So here’s a question I want to offer you, and it is something I have offered a client many a time. Are you willing to give up pretty progress? Or good performance or a balanced life, so to speak, for the results you want, I want you to think about that.
Are you willing to give all of that up for the results you want? And what if giving all of this up will feel like a relief to you? Your strive for balance might be keeping you from the results you want now because you might be making the goal more about your performance and what it’s supposed to look like rather than just weighing less on the scale or making healthier [00:10:00] eating decisions or feeling better in your body.
What simple skills are you not building effectively because you’re waiting for the results? balance or you’re waiting for your external environment to look or feel ideal. Here is what I want to offer true balances. So I want to invite you to change your definition of balance today to something more useful.
True balance is the messy middle, and this is what I like to call it. And the messy middle creates long term results. It is the only place you can master long term results. With healthy eating and weight loss, because here’s the thing. We think true balance is pretty and Zen, and we will never feel negative.
Nothing will ever go wrong. We’ll never fall off track. It’s fantasy land, right? Really balance is the opposite. Balance was meant to be messy. Balance is the perspective that progress can [00:11:00] be messy because the stakes aren’t so high that we have to perfect our way to the results we want. That is balance.
So I’m going to give you a very concrete example and it’s very simple. In my process, the Own Your Eating Habits process, like I mentioned, you will master the art of naturally healthy eating and sustainable weight loss without. Needing to perform highly without needing the perfect conditions, without needing to put in a lot of effort.
So I will usually have clients come in who feel a bit debilitated with all of their past efforts, right? They don’t have a lot of energy to put into this area of their life, but they come in with a lot of motivation and they’re like, okay, I’m ready to just give this my all, do all the prep, do all the planning, and.
Really set the conditions ideally for success. So this is when we’ll feel motivated to do all the things differently at once and prep our external environment. That is okay. It is okay to feel that, and it’s okay to [00:12:00] have fun with that. But what tends to happen is I’ll have clients come in and they will attempt to perform really, really well with healthy eating, plan all the things and prep all the things, and then inevitably life will get in the way and that no longer is sustainable.
That’s when the real work begins. So a common client example is traveling, right? Or vacations. And what will happen is I’ll have a client, come in and they really are still attached to that perfect performance and their perception of balance. So they will be planning all the things and prepping all the things.
All looks very pretty and they are making progress with weight loss. But then what happens is a season of traveling will come up, for example, and then they are in conditions where their progress can’t look so pretty. Maybe they have a delay at an airport and they couldn’t prep their foods for it. Or maybe they’re going out to an.
a restaurant that doesn’t have the healthiest food options, so they have to be [00:13:00] adaptable. They just do not have the ideal conditions that they were attached to, to create the weight loss. And so what will happen if their perception of balance is this fantasy where the expectations are really high, Is weeks like that will derail them and they’ll gain weight back, or they at the very least won’t lose weight because they have not learned to adapt.
And this is okay. This is why in Own Your Eating Habits, you have the space to make these mistakes because it will inform you of what to do next. But what clients have to learn is the messy middle and that this is actual balance where maybe you’re at the airport and the best you can do is to get some snacks from the little store with the newspapers and the books where they just have those things on hand that are a little bit processed and maybe you can grab a piece of fruit or a hard boiled egg somewhere to feel It’s not so much about the food choices here, you’re going to figure out what works [00:14:00] for you in terms of what foods you eat.
This is so much more around how you behave here. What would change if you knew you could create really stable results? With messy progress living in that messy middle where results can be created when ideal circumstances occur and you can have external balance, but also they can be created when you just have to make it work and it doesn’t look so pretty.
Something really funny that I like to share with you guys is occasionally I’ll get questions from y’all saying, Kat, why don’t you share more of your meals, more of your recipes, more of your food choices, as if there’s something I know that you guys don’t know. And that’s not the case. Most of you listening will have all of the knowledge you need to make healthy food choices nutritionally.
It’s very basic,
but sometimes when we think ideal external circumstances with food matter, we’ll think, Oh, the answer must be that I create these pretty meals, or that I must know what foods to eat that are better than all the others, or [00:15:00] somehow my external environment looks ideal. That is not the case, my friends. And I love telling you guys this.
The reason why I don’t post those things
it’s because I promise y’all they’re not going to be pretty or aesthetically pleasing, but they get the job done. I know what foods satisfy me. I know how to eat to create the results. I want, and that area of my life is just done, right? So I want you to think about, What if you could release these expectations you have to have this external balance where you have the routine, you have the prep, you have the planning, and what if you could shift your perspective to actual sustainable balance, which is just letting it be messy when it needs to be messy and creating results in that way.
What would change if you stopped needing your progress to look a certain way and instead you just focused on building skills over time, no matter how it needed to look?
What I see with the women and own your eating habits is this perspective shift [00:16:00] on what balance is so the initial non useful balance normally comes from thoughts like I have to do this or I need to do this or this should be happening so I should have a morning routine I need to have a morning routine
I need to be planning all the things true balance comes from. Um, an internal energy that you provide yourself when it comes to this area with thoughts like it’s safe to give myself the time I need. I am equipped to solve this problem. This is simple. Let your definition of balance lower the stakes with what it will take to eat healthy naturally and lose weight for the last time.
Because ideal external balance. Is never going to be sustainable and we will never indefinitely meet that mark in our lives. So if you need to grieve this perception that you will ever have long term external balance and know that you can create massive results. [00:17:00] without any of it. So if that interests you, my friend, join us in the Own Your Eating Habits membership.
You are going to love it. And I am so excited to be your coach. Again, go to catrentas. com forward slash membership to join us today. All right. I will see you next week.
